The Siwin Success Story: Making the Best Dumplings

The Edmonton Metro Region provides the best opportunity for success for food manufacturers, due to our friendly entrepreneurial climate, supportive infrastructure, and international expertise in this area. Yantai Xiwang Foods Co. Ltd. came to this conclusion when they were looking to expand internationally.

Based in Yantai, Shandong Province, China, and looking to grow overseas into the North American market, Yantai Xiwang Foods Co. Ltd.  needed expertise, high-quality raw materials, and a state-of-the-art offshore processing facility from which they could develop a new brand with new product.

In 2004, Edmonton became their North American home.

Landing in Leduc and operating out of the Food Processing Development Centre (FPDC) and Agrivalue Processing Business Incubator (APBI), Yantai Xiwang Foods Co. Ltd. was able to (1) launch a Canadian company called Siwin Foods Ltd., (2) develop locally-sourced quality product, and (3) test the Canadian market.

Alberta Agriculture implemented a soft-landing program for Siwin Foods that helped the new company adapt to a new culture and gave them access to first-rate facilities, technical resources, and expertise that was crucial to growing Siwin Food’s business and brand at a sustainable pace—all of which worked to keep operational costs manageable.

From there, EEDC has worked closely with Siwin Foods as they have grown enough to launch their own production facility in Edmonton, expand nationally across Canada, and have begun to export globally, with a supply contract with Costco Japan beginning in 2016 and export to additional countries following soon. Siwin Foods has also started to export the products of three other Alberta companies into the Chinese market, and they continue to partner with EEDC to help local Edmonton Region companies understand the Chinese consumer market.

Through the help of the FPDC/ABPI, the Government of Alberta, and EEDC, Siwin Foods has become an exemplary success story, demonstrating the value of the work we do in the Edmonton Metro Region and highlighting the way that global investment integrates into and grows our region’s business sector.
